HCMC - The Health Ministry this morning has confirmed seven new cases of coronavirus, taking Vietnam’s total to 148. Therefore, the ministry has advised people to stay indoors as much as possible and practice social distancing.

Within the past 24 hours, the country has reported 14 new cases of Covid-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. Among them, 11 cases do not pose a risk for community spread, with 10 people being placed in quaratine right after entering Vietnam and one case being a local doctor in Hanoi who caught the virus from a Covid-19 patient, according to the ministry.

As for the seven new cases confirmed this morning, five are Vietnamese and two are foreigners.

The 142nd and 148th cases traveled to many locations in HCMC and Hanoi before becoming symptomatic and being put into quarantine.

The 142nd case is a 26-year-old man residing in HCMC’s outlying district of Binh Chanh. The Vietnamese overseas student arrived in HCMC through Tan Son Nhat International Airport on March 10, departing from the United States and transiting through Taiwan. He then visited Binh Dan Hospital and the office of the U.S. Consulate General and met with some State employees in charge of temporary residences in Binh Chanh.

The 148th case is a 58-year-old Frenchman who entered Vietnam on March 12 and travelled to many places in Hanoi until March 19.

The five remaining cases were transferred to local quarantine centers on arrival.

The 143rd case, a 58-year-old South African national, had come into contact with a relative infected with the virus before flying back to HCMC on March 21 from the United States.

The 144th and 145th cases are Saigonese residents. The men arrived in Vietnam on March 22 and are being isolated in Can Tho City and Tra Vinh Province in the Mekong Delta.

The 146th patient in the north-central province of Nghe An returned to Vietnam from Thailand on March 20 and earlier came into contact with a confirmed case in Danang City.

Further, the 147th case is studying in the United Kingdom. He arrived in Hanoi on March 21 on Vietnam Airlines Flight VN0054.

As new infections are rising, the Health Ministry strongly advised people over 60 years old to remain at home at all times, while others should practice social distancing to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Local residents are encouraged to inform local authorities of any Vietnamese and foreigners who entered Vietnam from March 8 and did not comply with quarantine requirements.
