HCMC – Hanoi City is in the process of completing its proposal to build the second airport for the city in Ung Hoa District, south of the city, and submitting it to the Ministry of Transport.

The municipal Department of Planning and Architecture has proposed the Hanoi government ask the Hanoi Department of Transport to work closely with other relevant departments and agencies and transport consulting firm TEDI and come up with a plan to construct the second airport in Ung Hoa District and submit it to the ministry for consideration.

TEDI intended to propose building the second airport in Thanh Mien and Binh Giang districts in the northern province of Hai Duong for Hanoi City and raising the capacity of Noi Bai International Airport to 100 million passengers per year, according to the municipal Department of Planning and Architecture.

The department, however, said that building the second airport in Ung Hoa District in the city will offer more advantages due to the short distance, travel time, convenient traffic infrastructure and easy access to three modes of transport—roadways, waterways and railways.

Moreover, the land set aside for the construction of the second airport in this district is mainly farmland, which will not affect residential areas, making site clearance easier, the local media reported.

Citing a revised draft of the general master plan for construction in Hanoi until 2030, with a vision toward 2050, approved by the prime minister in 2016, the department said there were four options in terms of locations for the second airport in the capital city, including Ly Ngan District in Ha Nam Province, 60-65 kilometers from central Hanoi.

The second location is in Ung Hoa District of Hanoi City, 35-40 kilometers from central Hanoi, the third in Hai Duong Province, 45-50 kilometers from downtown Hanoi and the fourth in Tien Lanh District of Haiphong City, 120 kilometers from downtown Hanoi.
