HCMC – The Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) on January 10 began work on the Hoa Binh hydropower plant expansion project in Hoa Binh Province, with a total capacity of 480 megawatts (MW) and a total investment of over VND9.2 trillion.

The capital for the project will be sourced from EVN, a domestic loan from Vietcombank and a foreign loan without Government guarantees from the French Development Agency (AFD), Phap Luat Online reported.

The expansion project, which will cover an area of 99.6 hectares, is set to have two generators with a capacity of 240 MW each, producing some 488 million kWh of electricity a year.

Power Engineering Consulting JSC 1 will act as a technical design consulting firm for the project and the consortium of contractors will comprise Truong Son Construction Corporation, Construction JSC 47 and Lilama 10 JSC.

After its completion in the fourth quarter of 2024, the capacity of the entire Hoa Binh hydropower plant will reach 2,400 MW.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that the major hydropower plant projects built on the Da River such as Hoa Binh, Son La and Lai Chau are intensifying the country’s industrialization and modernization process.

Besides, these hydropower plants are expected to contribute to regulating the flow of water and restricting flooding, generating power and facilitating waterway traffic systems.

As for the Hoa Binh hydropower plant expansion project, PM Phuc highly valued EVN’s efforts in steps such as preparations for investment, design and technical aspects.

The prime minister also told the group to closely collaborate with relevant units and contractors to ensure the construction of the project goes smoothly.
