HCMC - Haiphong Chairman Nguyen Van Tung on February 26 decided to suspend the operation of eight checkpoints at gates to facilitate the transportation and circulation of goods, boosting production and business activities.

The decision followed the prime minister’s directive, while the city is waiting for the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s issuance on processes of transporting goods into Covid-19-hit areas, the local media reported.

The eight checkpoints which have been suspended were located in Thuy Nguyen, Hai An, Duong Kinh, An Lao, Vinh Bao and Cat Hai districts.

Other checkpoints in the city remain operational, but are required not to check vehicles transporting goods. These checkpoints still check cars carrying people and pedestrians.

The owners of vehicles transporting goods are required to ask drivers to follow Covid-19 infection prevention and control measures to avoid causing Covid-19 community transmission while transporting and delivering goods.

The suspension of the eight checkpoints aimed at facilitating the transport of goods into the city will not affect control over the spread of Covid-19 as many localities have managed to bring the disease under control and the owners of vehicles and goods have been given the responsibility of monitoring drivers.

Haiphong City’s decision will create favorable conditions for exports, mainly farm produce from Hai Duong Province, to be transported to the Haiphong port. Some 80% of the province’s agricultural products are exported through the city’s port.
