HCMC – The Ministry of National Defense on April 5 began work on the Phan Thiet airport project which covers 543 hectares of land in Thien Nghiep Commune of Binh Thuan Province.

Senior Lieutenant General Tran Don, Deputy Minister of National Defense, said the ministry had directed agencies to quickly complete investment procedures in line with the law. Work on the project is expected to be completed by the end of next year, the local media reported.

He asked the Binh Thuan government to closely coordinate with the relevant agencies of the Ministry of National Defense in the site clearance work and the sufficient supply of building materials.

The prime minister approved the project in 2009. Work on it was previously scheduled to start in 2015 for completion in 2018 but was delayed.

In 2017, the Binh Thuan government proposed upgrading the airport project from grade 4C to 4E and increasing the length of the runway from 2.4 to 3.05 kilometers so that international flights can land at the airport in the future.

A year later, the then prime minister gave the green light to the proposal, making the project one of the 15 4E airports for both military and civil purposes in the country. The estimated investment for the project was some VND10 trillion.

At a meeting with the Binh Thuan government last month, Don said the biggest obstacle facing the project, which is the lack of capital, had been resolved as the Government has agreed to use public investment for the project.

According to a master plan approved by the Government, the country will have 28 airports by 2030, consisting of 15 domestic and 13 international airports. Of them, Phan Thiet airport will be one of the six domestic airports in the south, together with Buon Ma Thuot, Lien Khuong, Con Dao, Rach Gia and Ca Mau.
