HCMC – Oil giant Shell has started selling a carbon neutral lubricant called Helix 0W40 in Vietnam, aimed at helping its customers reduce emissions while driving, said Darren McPherson, new general director of Shell Vietnam.
He told the Saigon Times that there is a surging demand for products which can help reduce the carbon footprint of drivers in Vietnam and it is forecast to increase further in the upcoming period. This is due to the increasing demand for cars buoyed by the growing economy, the requirements of vehicle users and Vietnam’s commitment to cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
The carbon neutral lubricant is Shell’s latest product, which was launched globally in February 23, marking a milestone in Shell’s multi-year strategy to reduce the carbon intensity of its products.
Shell is set to offset the annual emissions of over 200 million liters of advanced synthetic lubricants, expecting to compensate around 700,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per year, which is comparable to taking some 340,000 cars off the road for one year.
Since 2016, Shell has reduced the carbon intensity of its lubricants manufacturing by over 30%. Besides this, more than 50% of power used in its lubricant blending plants comes from renewable sources. Shell is also reducing packaging waste from lubricants products at scale by increasing the use of recycled materials and exploring more sustainable packaging solutions across its supply chains.
As for next year, Shell Vietnam will launch more products in the local market, such as industrial greases, the Shell Vietnam representative added.
