HCMC – The northern province of Quang Ninh took the lead in the country in terms of the provincial competitiveness index (PCI) for four straight years due to its reform efforts, according to the PCI 2020 report published by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) in Hanoi City on April 15.

The PCI 2020, which is a joint effort between VCCI and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), ranked Vietnam’s 63 cities and provinces based on the quality of economic governance based on 10 key sectors that affect private sector development.

Quang Ninh Province obtained a PCI score of 75.09 based on a survey of 10,700 private domestic businesses and 1,600 foreign-invested enterprises, up 2.69 points against 2019.

Dong Thap and Long An provinces ranked second and third with PCI scores of 72.81 and 70.37, respectively.

Binh Duong, Danang, Vinh Long, Haiphong, Ben Tre, Hanoi and Bac Ninh were among the top performers in the 2020 PCI ranking, while Quang Nam Province dropped out of the top 10, the local media reported.

VCCI Chairman Vu Tien Loc said that the PCI 2020 helped recognize the improvements of the cities and provinces and encourage them to improve the business environment.

Meanwhile, a representative of USAID Vietnam said that the report had played an important role in improving transparency and accountability in the economic governance of provinces and cities over the past 16 years.
