On April 14, 2021, the Ambassador of the French Republic to Vietnam, on behalf of French President E. Macron, awarded the Legion of Honor to Madame Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao - the first self-made female billionaire in Southeast Asia, also the first Vietnamese businesswoman to receive this noble honor. The event captured the attention of a great number of people at home and the international community.

The Legion of Honor - The prestigious order of merit

At the awarding ceremony, Ambassador Nicolas Warnery commended Madame Thao for her contributions, expressing his genuine appreciation for her vision, wisdom and compassion, her business philosophy for the development of the community, for future generations. The ambassador extended his gratitude to the firms she led Sovico, Vietjet and HDBank among others for always accompanying and cooperating with French enterprises and the French people, especially during the period affected by Covid-19.

The Legion of Honor, the most prestigious, long-standing and highest order of merit established by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, is presented to individuals and organizations with special contributions. Given her successes in various fields from finance, aviation, real estate to international trade, Madame Thao is admired internationally for her contributions to the economic development of both Vietnam and the world.

In this time of pandemic, her Vietjet carrier has operated thousands of rescue and relief flights, donating millions of medical masks to the people of the UK, France, Germany, and the U.S., etc.

At the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs To Anh Dung said, “Today’s event will be a hallmark in the diplomatic, cultural and economic relations between the two countries. In front of global friends, we are proud of the great values of a steadfast and well developing Vietnam thanks to the joint forces of the businesspeople with Madame Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao as a typical female representative.”

As the Chairwoman of Sovico Group and the CEO of Vietjet, Madame Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao has made special contributions to promoting economic and cultural cooperation, partnership for development, highlighted by impressive achievements in the strategic partnership and economic cooperation between Vietnam and the world. Faced with the fact that Covid-19 is raging, which forces people to fall apart, Madame Thao said at the ceremony, “Together, let’s work hard to repel Covid-19, to soon make life normal again, restore the economy, reform education for children, change the way of working in the digital economy, pay due attention to medical care and people’s health, so that senior citizens can live happily and healthily with their families, and companies and factories can resume operations and create more jobs.”
