HCMC - The University Medical Center – a major hospital under the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in HCMC – has closed after a nurse of its neurology department tested positive for Covid-19.

The nurse’s husband has also been found to have the coronavirus after developing symptoms such as cough and fever.

The husband earlier visited the hospital for medical examination after he had experienced fever and cough. As an anti-Covid-19 protocol, hospital staff conducted a screening test and found he was positive for the coronavirus. He was then whisked to the Cu Chi Covid-19 Treatment Hospital in the city’s outlying district of the same name.

The hospital concurrently tested the man’s wife and all her colleagues in the neurology department, together with patients and caregivers in the department. The nurse tested positive and was then sent to the Can Gio Covid-19 Treatment Hospital for treatment in the city’s outlying coastal district of the same name.

The nurse, who got the first Covid-19 vaccine shot on May 5, has a low viral load, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

Around 3,621 samples had been collected from people who work at the neurology department or who came into close contact with the nurse. The results have come back negative.

The HCMC University of Medicine and Pharmacy has also taken samples from 510 inpatients for Covid-19 tests.

The hospital has locked down the neurology department and stopped receiving patients.

Officials from the HCMC Pasteur Institute and the HCMC Center for Disease Control visited the hospital for a further epidemiological investigation.

The HCMC University of Medicine and Pharmacy receives 5,000-6,000 people who come for medical treatment and examination a day.
