Professor Ngo Bao Chau, the first Vietnamese to win the prestigious Fields Medal in mathematics, will arrive in HCMC on March 10 to visit HCMC’s People’s Committee and Vietnam National University – HCMC (VNU-HCMC).

Chau will be accompanied by Prof. Robert Zimmer, president of Chicago University, Prof. Bartsch from Chicago University, and professors from Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

During the three day visit, the Professor will attend a roundtable on strengthening cooperation in scientific research and training on March 10; a meeting with leaders, teachers and students of VNU-HCMC and students from other universities and schools in the city at 9:30 a.m. on March 11; and a meeting between VNU-HCMC and Chicago University on March 10.

Ngo Bao Chau was born on June 28, 1972, in Hanoi, Vietnam. After graduating from secondary school in Vietnam, he moved to France and studied at the Université Paris 6. He obtained his PhD Degree at 25 in Orsay under the supervision of Gérard Laumon. He became professor at University Paris 11 in 2004.

Chau was awarded the 2010 Fields Medal for his proof of the Fundamental Lemma in the theory of automorphic forms through the introduction of new algebro-geometric methods. Previously, his work was selected by Time magazine as one of the Top Ten Scientific Discoveries of 2009.

Chau has won other prizes including the Clay Research Award in 2004 by solving part of the fundamental lemma, and the Sophie Germain prize and the Oberwolfach prize in 2007.

Chau became the youngest professor in Vietnam when he was given the title by the Government in 2005. Recently, he has been appointed as director of the Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics, according to a decision by Education and Training Minister Pham Vu Luan. Chau is now teaching at Chicago University nine months a year. Three months of the year he will come back to Vietnam as the director of the institute and to join scientific researches to promote mathematics in Vietnam.

The Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics’ role is to complement government scientific and technological programs and projects and train young Vietnamese mathematicians to become international experts; and attract overseas Vietnamese and international mathematicians to Vietnam to do research.
