The European Commission on October 17 adopted the trade and investment agreements between the European Union and Vietnam, paving the way for their signature and conclusion. The commission is now submitting to the Council of the European Union the proposals for conclusion and ratification of both agreements on free trade and investment protection. The trade agreement will eliminate virtually all tariffs on goods traded between the two sides.

HCMC – United States Secretary of Defense James Mattis today, October 17, made a visit to Bien Hoa Airport – a former air base for U.S. forces storing chemical defoliant Agent Orange, which is blamed for birth defects and cancers among a million Vietnamese – in the southern province of Dong Nai.

As of August, Taiwanese enterprises had registered to invest US$30.9 billion in Vietnam, making Taiwan become the fourth biggest foreign investor in Vietnam, after South Korea, Japan and Singapore, said Liang Kuang Chung, head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in HCMC. The majority of Taiwanese-invested projects in Vietnam are of small- and medium-scale ones.
