HCMC – The Ministry of Health confirmed 81 fresh Covid-19 cases by community transmission this morning, June 18, with the two biggest coronavirus hotspots of HCMC and Bac Giang Province reporting 60 and 21 cases, respectively.

Among the new patients, 76 cases were detected in quarantine centers or areas under lockdown.

The latest infections brought the number of locally-transmitted cases in Vietnam during the fourth coronavirus wave, which began on April 27, to 8,995 cases in 40 provinces and cities. Of them, Bac Giang accounted for 5,028 cases and HCMC had 1,257 cases.

Up to now, 25 localities had undergone two weeks without reporting any new domestic infections.

In related news, Lao Cai City in the province of the same name began social distancing in line with the prime minister’s Directive 16 starting today, after it reported a suspected case through a Covid-19 screening test.

The case was identified as N.V.H, a local resident who works as a driver, reported VietnamPlus.

He developed the symptoms of coughing, fever, and fatigue on June 15 and took medicines available at home to treat the symptoms.

Yesterday, he went to the Lao Cai Provincial General Hospital for a medical check-up, where he tested positive for the virus through a screening test.

Following the detection of the suspected case, the provincial anti-Covid-19 steering committee convened a meeting to discuss response measures, while the local health authority last night collected samples of people linked to him for testing as well as quarantined and disinfected affected areas.
