HCMC – Seven consecutive tremors hit Kon Plong District in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum yesterday, September 1, with one of them measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale, according to the Institute of Geophysics.
The first quake of magnitude 2.7, with a depth of around eight kilometers, occurred at 9:13 a.m. The second one of magnitude 4.1 jolted the district at 1:39 p.m, with a depth of 8.1 kilometers.
The next five tremors of magnitude ranging from 2.8 to 3.9 struck until 6:30 p.m. These tremors posed no risk of a natural disaster, the Institute of Geophysics said.
The institute’s Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center is monitoring the tremors.
According to the Prime Minister’s Decision 18 issued in 2021 over natural disasters and disaster risk forecasting and warning to serve the prevention, control and remediation of natural disasters in the country, a magnitude-4.1 earthquake is considered a mild quake.
Solid buildings and facilities in this highland province can be resistant to these tremors, while temporarily built facilities and those with tile or galvanized steel roofs could be slightly affected.
Earlier, a magnitude-4.7 earthquake shook Kon Plong on August 23, triggering concern among local residents. Following this quake, multiple tremors continued to hit the district.
The Prime Minister then asked the Ministry of Science and Technology to coordinate with the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology to study and assess these quakes and propose coping solutions.
Pham The Truyen, deputy director of the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center, said that the district has seen a rising number of quakes since February last year.
