HCMC – Eight local people had been killed as of 17:30 yesterday, October 2, as torrential rains and floods in the aftermath of Super Typhoon Noru hit the north-central provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, and Ha Tinh.
Heavy downpours and floods left 26 houses devastated over 70%, 143 others having their roofs blown off by strong winds. More than 2,000 households had to relocate to safe areas, over 14,000 were inundated by floodwaters which were reportedly ebbing slowly, according to data of the provincial steering committees for natural disasters prevention and control.
The bad weather also damaged nearly 11,500 hectares of rice paddies and plants, over 3,800 hectares of industrial and fruit plants, close to 135 hectares of forests, over 9,000 hectares of ponds, and more than 710 tons of salt.
In addition, 155,340 poultry and cattle were killed and swept away by floodwaters. The unexpected weather also wreaked havoc on many public infrastructure facilities such as 127 schools, 9,150 meters of canals, 26 small-sized dams, 82 bridges and drainage pipes, among others.
Floods caused the most damage to Ky Son District in Nghe An Province as 14 houses were swept away by floodwaters, 85 others and State agencies were submerged in floodwaters, while landslides hit 19 houses.
Authorities in the affected localities were told to continue to dispatch forces to handle the aftermath of the typhoon and quickly restore the normal production and daily life of locals.
