Former deputy defense minister dies aged 66

HCMC – Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, former Deputy Minister of National Defense of Vietnam, died from serious illness today, September 14, at the age of 66.

Nguyen Chi Vinh, a resident of Thua-Thien Hue Province, was the son of General Nguyen Chi Thanh, the late Chief of the General Department of Political Affairs of the Vietnam People’s Army.

Vinh began his career at the military intelligence agency of Vietnam and was later promoted to the post of deputy director general before becoming general director of the General Department of Defense Intelligence (General Department II) under the Ministry of National Defense.

He served as deputy minister of National Defense from 2009 until June 2021 when he retired. During his 12 years as deputy minister, Vinh made significant contributions to the development of defense relations, including sending troops to participate in United Nations peacekeeping efforts and organizing various ASEAN defense conferences.

In recognition of his contributions to the country, the Party and State bestowed several prestigious honors upon him.

In May, the Japanese Government honored him with the order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon for his contributions to the development of defense cooperation between Vietnam and Japan.
