Over 5,200 people die from accidents in H1

HCMC – More than 5,200 people died from accidents between December 15, 2023, and June 14, 2024, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee.

The first six months of 2024 saw a total of over 12,320 accidents, which resulted in 5,255 deaths and 9,599 injuries. Despite an increase in the number of accidents, the fatality rate has decreased compared to the same period last year, said Tran Huu Minh, office manager at the committee.

Accidents in the first half of 2024 rose by 1,842, a 17.6% year-on-year increase. However, fatalities dropped by 702 cases, an 11.8% decrease from the same period last year. The number of injuries surged by 2,700, a 39.3% increase.

Auto accidents were the leading cause of fatalities in Vietnam, resulting in 5,191 deaths and 9,584 injuries.

Railway accidents were far less common, with 66 cases causing 48 deaths and 10 injuries. Waterway incidents and maritime incidents were even less frequent but still resulted in 15 and one fatality along with injuries, respectively.
