HCMC – The Ministry of Transport has approved a masterplan to expand Ca Mau airport by five times its current size by 2030, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
Currently, the airport operates a single runway for ATR72 twin-engine turboprop aircraft or similar-sized planes, with one route to HCMC operating four weekly flights.
By 2030, the airport’s capacity will increase to around one million passengers annually, up from the current 200,000. The expansion will also prepare the airport to service both civilian and military aircraft like Airbus A321 and A320.
The upgrade will elevate the airport’s classification from 3C to 4C according to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, with a cargo handling capacity of 1,000 tons annually by 2030, increasing to 3,000 tons by 2050.
The airport’s land area will be expanded to 184 hectares by 2030 and around 244 hectares by 2050.
The Airports Corporation of Vietnam estimates that the expansion will require over VND2.25 trillion (US$88.4 million), excluding land clearance costs.
