HCMC – Vietnam experienced an increase in seismic activity in September, with 36 earthquakes and tremors recorded across the country, according to the Institute of Geophysics.

Thirty-two of these earthquakes occurred in Kon Plong District in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum, said Nguyen Xuan Anh, director of the institute.

The district saw five earthquakes on both September 5 and 24, and four on September 10.

The frequency of earthquakes in Kon Plong has remained high since July, which saw 82 incidences, including a 5-magnitude quake on July 28, the strongest ever recorded in the area. September had a slight decrease in seismic activity compared to the previous two months.

Anh warned that the ongoing seismic activity in Kon Tum could pose risks to populated areas and critical infrastructure. Local authorities have been advised to regularly update residents on the situation and implement earthquake-resistant construction standards.

Since the beginning of this year, Vietnam has recorded 353 earthquakes, with nearly 98% occurring in Kon Plong District.
