HCMC – The 2G mobile networks have been officially discontinued nationwide as of October 16 to pave the way for the development of advanced technologies such as 4G and 5G better suited to meet the growing needs of users.
The Vietnam Telecommunications Authority, under the Ministry of Information and Communications, announced that starting at 12 a.m. today, mobile carriers will no longer provide services to feature phones that only support 2G technology.
Viettel, Mobifone and Vinaphone representatives confirmed that 2G users who have not upgraded their services by October 15 will have their devices blocked. However, users will have an additional two months to switch to newer technologies, with their phone numbers and accounts remaining active during this period to ensure no loss of information.
Vietnam had over 18.2 million 2G subscribers at the start of this year, but that number has recently dropped to around 400,000. After 30 years in operation, the 2G network is considered outdated in terms of technology and security. Most mobile users have already transitioned to 4G, which has been available since 2016.
