HCMC – The north-central province of Nghe An will allocate 210 hectares of land and water surface in Dong Minh and Dong Thanh villages for a US$2.15-billion power plant running on liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The People’s Council of Nghe An Province has approved the handover, which will cover about 60 hectares of land and 150 hectares of water. The project will feature a gas power station, an LNG port capable of accommodating ships of 100,000-150,000 deadweight tons, and a regasification facility. The plant is expected to import around 1.15 million tons of LNG annually and generate 1,500 megawatts of power across two units.
Thai Thanh Quy, chairman of the Nghe An People’s Council, said that the LNG power plant is a key project under National Power Development Plan VIII, contributing significantly to national energy security. Relevant agencies are working to finalize investment approval procedures by the first half of 2025, after which a tender process will be initiated to select an investor.
This LNG-fired power plant is part of Vietnam’s National Power Development Plan VIII, which seeks to boost national energy security by increasing the country’s total LNG power generation capacity to 22,400 megawatts.
The project is prioritized under Decision No. 500/QD-TTg issued by the Prime Minister on May 15, 2023, as part of the national electricity development plan for 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050.
