HCMC – Long An Province has put forward a series of incentives to increase container traffic through its ports, aiming to drive local economic growth and attract more investment.
The proposal, announced at a recent workshop held by the Long An People’s Committee, outlined plans to develop the province’s port infrastructure and make it more appealing to shipping companies.
Nguyen Minh Lam, vice chairman of the committee, said that strengthening the port system and increasing container traffic are essential components of Long An’s industrialization and modernization goals. While the province boasts several modern ports, including the Long An International Port, Lam acknowledged challenges in attracting large shipping lines to the area.
To address these issues, Lam called for a structured policy framework to incentivize container traffic, urging the province’s Department of Transport to collaborate with relevant agencies. This team will evaluate the policy’s legal and practical aspects, identify key stakeholders, and determine appropriate budget support.
Dr. Tran Thi Anh Tam from the University of Economics HCMC suggested a “three-party” collaboration model involving port managers, regional exporters, and international shipping lines. She also recommended optimizing barge transport to lower logistics costs, which could make Long An’s ports more competitive.
