Vietnam’s Covid case count rises by 3,639

HCMC – The Ministry of Health confirmed 3,639 new Covid-19 cases this evening, October 25, with 19 of them imported and 3,620 locally infected, sending the country’s total case count so far to 892,579.

The new infections were detected in 53 cities and provinces. HCMC reported the most infections, at 969, followed by Binh Duong with 517, Dong Nai with 458, An Giang with 232, Tay Ninh with 163, Bac Lieu with 156 and Tien Giang with 111.

Other cities and provinces reported fewer than 100 cases each.

With the fresh cases recorded today, domestically transmitted cases amounted to 887,797 in the fourth wave of the pandemic, which began in late April 2021.

This afternoon, the Ministry of Health confirmed 65 more Covid deaths, taking the nation’s total to 21,738. The new deaths included 40 in HCMC, 11 in Binh Duong, seven in Dong Nai, three in Tay Ninh, two in Bac Lieu and one each in An Giang and Tien Giang.

To date, 804,484 Covid patients have fully recovered nationwide. Currently over 3,100 coronavirus patients are in critical condition.

Vietnam has administered 74 million doses of Covid vaccines nationwide so far. Some 21.4 million people aged 18 and older have got two shots.

Vietnam has received a total of 3.1 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccines donated by the U.S. and Japan in the past few days.

Late last week, 500,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine donated by Japan arrived at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCMC, bringing the total donations by Japan to 4.08 million doses.

Besides, over 2.6 million doses of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine donated by the United States through the Covax Facility have arrived in Vietnam. More than 1.3 million doses of the total arrived in Hanoi on October 24 and the rest came to HCMC this morning, October 25.

“Continuing to build on our longstanding cooperation and investment in Vietnam’s health infrastructure, we have provided support to essentially every pillar of the country’s pandemic response,” the U.S. Embassy said in a statement.

As of mid-October, Vietnam had spent VND45.6 trillion (some US$2 billion) on the Covid-19 fight, according to the Ministry of Finance.

Of the figure, VND22.9 trillion was sourced from the State budget to buy the Covid-19 vaccines, fund pandemic prevention and control efforts and support people affected by Covid-19. The remaining VND22.7 trillion came from the local budgets.
