HCMC – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has called on Airbus to deepen its presence in Vietnam by expanding investments in aircraft manufacturing, maintenance, and training.
At a March 14 meeting with Wouter Van Wersch, Executive Vice President International at Airbus, Chinh highlighted Vietnam’s rapidly growing aviation market and urged Airbus to accelerate aircraft deliveries to support local airlines’ fleet expansion.
Chinh proposed that Airbus establish aircraft component manufacturing plants and an MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) center in Vietnam. He also encouraged technology transfers and workforce training to strengthen Vietnam’s aviation capabilities.
Vietnam is open to broader cooperation in aerospace technology, aviation logistics, satellite development, and digital transformation, he added, pledging to enhance the investment climate and aviation infrastructure to support Airbus and other global aviation firms.
Van Wersch reaffirmed Airbus’s long-term commitment to Vietnam, recognizing its potential as a regional aviation hub. He noted that Airbus is actively exploring opportunities in aerospace technology, component production, and sustainable aviation development.
Currently, Airbus aircraft make up 65% of Vietnam’s commercial fleet, with around 200 jets operated by local carriers. The company is also partnering with a Japanese firm to develop an aircraft component factory in Vietnam.
Vietnam’s aviation market continues to expand, with international passenger traffic reaching 41.4 million and cargo volumes hitting one million tons in 2024. To accommodate growth, major airports such as Long Thanh, Chu Lai, and Gia Binh are undergoing significant development. The country currently operates 98 international routes to 20 countries and territories, solidifying its position as a key aviation hub in the region.
