Land clearance delays hamper National Highway 50 expansion project

HCMC – The expansion of National Highway 50, a key infrastructure project connecting HCMC and Long An Province, is facing delays due to unresolved land clearance issues, according to the HCMC Management Board of Investment and Construction of Traffic Projects.

Launched in late 2022, the project includes a 4.3-kilometer newly constructed section and a 2.6-kilometer upgrade of the existing highway. It stretches from Binh Chanh District in HCMC to the border of Can Giuoc District in Long An Province, and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.

However, slow progress in site clearance, managed by the Binh Chanh District People’s Committee, has set the project back by a year. As of March, land disputes involving five households, including two along the new parallel section and three on the expanded stretch, remain unresolved.

Construction contractors have accelerated work in cleared areas. A section from the Trinh Quang Nghi intersection to the existing National Highway 50 was opened to traffic in late 2024. Yet, full completion by the target date of December 31 this year hinges on the handover of the remaining land.

Two critical segments are still awaiting clearance. The parallel road section and the final stretch each face land access issues with one household, involving plots of 600 square meters and 265 square meters, respectively.

Another key section, from Nguyen Van Linh Street to Trinh Quang Nghi intersection, is expected to be completed by September, provided that land is handed over in April. Similarly, the expanded highway segment could be finished by December if the remaining land is cleared by the end of this month.

Project officials emphasized that full site clearance by April 30 is essential to avoid further delays and ensure timely project delivery.
