HCMC — The Ministry of Construction has approved adjustments to the master plan for Gia Binh International Airport in Bac Ninh Province, setting a capacity target of 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tons of cargo per year by 2030.
The revised plan, signed by Construction Minister Tran Hong Minh, outlines the airport’s development for 2021–2030, with a long-term vision to 2050.
By 2030, the airport would be capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft, including Boeing 747, 777 and 787, and Airbus A380, A350, and A321. It will have two runways — one 3,500 meters long and the other 4,000 meters long — positioned about 1,800 meters apart. A parallel taxiway system, along with connecting and rapid-exit taxiways, will be developed to ensure efficient operations.
By 2050, the airport’s capacity is projected to increase to 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tons of cargo per year. The long-term plan includes two additional runways and an expanded taxiway system.
The airport will cover about 1,960 hectares and connect to the Hanoi–Gia Binh–Haiphong Expressway, the national railway, and the Hanoi Metro through a terminal station.
The ministry has asked Hanoi and Bac Ninh authorities to coordinate on related planning and infrastructure investments. Bac Ninh is also required to incorporate the airport into its provincial planning, manage land and infrastructure systems, and reserve space for expansion.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, total investment capital for the 2021–2030 phase is estimated at VND161.6 trillion, with another VND52.7 trillion for the period to 2050.
When included in the national airport system plan, total investment demand for airport development nationwide through 2030 is projected to reach about VND485 trillion, sourced from state funds, private investors, and other legal sources.
