HCMC – The Ministry of Health this evening, February 14 confirmed 29,413 new Covid cases, the highest in a single day since October last year.

Among the latest Covid cases, 10 were imported and 29,403 were locally infected in all 63 cities and provinces, up 3,031 cases over yesterday.

Hanoi City took the lead in the number of new cases at 3,507, followed by Hai Duong with 1,915, Haiphong with 1,489, Nghe An with 1,385, Lang Son with 1,379, Nam Dinh with 1,362, Thai Nguyen with 1,275 and Phu Tho with 1,053.

Vinh Phuc, Ninh Binh, Bac Ninh, Hoa Binh, Quang Ninh, Danang and Thanh Hoa detected 776-982 infections each, while other localities had fewer than 700 cases each.

Since the pandemic emerged in Vietnam, the country has reported over 2.54 million Covid cases.

The ministry also reported 91 new Covid fatalities in 29 cities and provinces, raising the country’s Covid death toll to 39,037.

In related news, due to declining daily Covid infections in HCMC, the municipal Department of Health has proposed the HCMC government shut down some Covid field hospitals.

Suspending the operations of some field hospitals in the city will allow frontline medical workers to restore their health to get ready for another potential wave of the pandemic, according to the municipal department.

The department proposed closing the field hospitals 6, 8 and 12, while restoring the original function of Pham Ngoc Thanh, Trung Vuong, An Binh and Cu Chi District hospitals and the Children’s Hospital.

In addition, the department also wanted to temporarily shut down the Covid-19 Resuscitation Center to put the Oncology Hospital No. 2 into operation, the local media reported.

Under the proposal, the field hospitals in districts and Thu Duc City and at export processing and industrial zones will remain operational.

The field hospitals 13, 14 and 16 will also remain operational, while the HCMC Hospital for Tropical Diseases and Cho Ray Hospital will maintain 200 beds for Covid treatment each.

If the number of new Covid infections jumps, the city will be able to reopen all field hospitals under suspension within 24 hours, according to the municipal department.

HCMC today reported 285 new Covid infections.
