Bui Van Khoi, 33, opened a charging station for electric vehicles (EV) at his house on Vo Van Ngan Street, Thu Duc Ward, HCMC. As a franchisee for a franchiser who owns some 30 EV charging stations around the city, Khoi installed a 1,800-watt three-phase current system that can charge 10 electric bikes at a time.

Khoi charges VND20,000 for batteries with over 50% DoD (Depth of Discharge), and VND30,000 for below 50% DoD batteries. Drivers who have their batteries charged at Khoi’s station can enjoy free iced tea, free bath and free washing. They can also rest in folding chairs comfortably in rooms equipped with electric fans.

Khoi also offers bunk beds in air-conditioned rooms for drivers waiting for their batteries to be charged. Those who want to take a nap on air-conditioned bunk beds have to pay VND5,000 each. He also offers air-conditioned rooms for rent at VND1.5 million for the first month, and VND2 million for the following months. Room tenants can enjoy free bath and free battery charge.

Khoi told thanhnien.vn that about 50 batteries are charged at his station on weekdays, and the number amounts to some 80 on weekends.

Electricians volunteer to repair flood-damaged appliances in central region

More than 100 electricians and appliance repair technicians volunteered to help residents in flood-stricken mountainous areas of Nghe An Province, after torrential rains in the aftermath of Storm Wipha swept through the region in July.

Coordinated by the Nghe An Electronics and Refrigeration Association, teams established four repair stations in the worst-affected communes, offering free repairs for hundreds of household items damaged by water and mud.

“Each day we handle hundreds of devices, all damaged by water and mud,” Nguyen Thanh Diep, a 35-year-old technician, told the Tuoi Tre news site.

Alongside free labor, volunteers provided basic replacement parts at no cost. Appliances too badly damaged for repair were assessed, with owners advised on possible next steps. The assistance helped residents regain essential household items and begin returning to normal life after the floods.

An American physiotherapist in Vietnam

Virginia Mary Lockett, an American physiotherapist, has devoted her life and effort to helping patients at the Orthopedic and Physical Rehabilitation Hospital and the Traditional Medicine Hospital in the central city of Danang over the past 20 years.

In 1995, Lockett and her husband, David Lockett, went to Nha Trang, Vietnam, to adopt a child. Ten years later, she went to Vietnam to work for three weeks at the Danang Orthopedic and Physical Rehabilitation Hospital as a volunteer. Back to the U.S., she and her husband established Steady Footsteps, a non-profit organization conducting physical rehabilitation for people with disabilities. In 2006, the couple decided to sell their house in the U.S. and went to Danang City to help local patients in need.

Every day, Lockett conducts physiotherapy and physical rehabilitation for patients at the two hospitals in the city without earning any pay. Meanwhile, her husband makes supporting tools and presents them to those in need. Over the past two decades, the couple have helped thousands of local patients.

Lockett told vnexpress.net that she and her husband live a happy life in Danang among many kind people. “Danang has become our home for a long time,” she said.
