Phong Nam, a 500-year-old village located about 10 kilometers southwest of downtown Danang, still maintains features of a traditional central Vietnamese community, with bamboo hedges, ancient temples, rice fields, and houses that are over a century old.

According to local records, Phong Nam originally started as Phong Le Village, founded in 1404 during the Ho Dynasty. In 1896, during King Thanh Thai’s reign, the village was split into Phong Le Bac (Phong Bac) and Phong Le Nam (Phong Nam) because of its size and the Yen River flowing through it.

The first Vietnamese settlers in the area came from Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, and Ha Tinh provinces, either accompanying royal troops or fleeing from conflict. Over the centuries, they established religious and cultural institutions that have been passed down through generations. Phong Nam is also known as the birthplace of the scholar and military official Ong Ich Khiem.

In March 2025, Danang authorities launched the “Special Cultural Village” project for Phong Nam ancient village, with funding of over VND75 billion allocated through 2030, with a long-term vision to 2045. The Hoa Chau Ecological Agriculture Community Tourism Cooperative has also been established to support the plan.

Alongside Phong Nam in Hoa Xuan Ward and Bo Ban Village in Hoa Vang Commune, both are included in the same initiative. The total investment for both villages exceeds VND89 billion, with VND75.33 billion allocated for Phong Nam and VND14.02 billion for Bo Ban.

The project aims to preserve and promote local cultural heritage and traditions while enhancing residents’ living standards. It will also align with the government’s “advanced new rural commune” and “model new rural commune” criteria, ensuring both cultural continuity and socioeconomic progress.
