The solemn Festival of Hue Nam Temple—also known as Hon Chen Temple—is a cultural event in the ancient capital of Hue. Held annually during the seventh lunar month, it is recognized as a vibrant folk festival along the iconic Huong River, drawing pilgrims and tourists alike, both local and international.
The festivities begin with a sacred ceremony at the Thien Tien Thanh Giao Holy Temple in Hue. Despite heavy rain, hundreds of devotees and visitors gather early to take part in the solemn rituals that precede the grand procession. The procession then journeys upstream along the Huong River toward Hue Nam Temple, featuring a fleet of vividly decorated dragon boats adorned with flags, altars, and offerings.
Hue Nam Temple is dedicated to the revered Goddess Thien Y A Na. According to legend, she is credited with creating the earth and essential elements of life such as agarwood and rice. She is also believed to be a spiritual force who inspired the planting of bodhi trees, symbolizing wisdom and enlightenment.
This festival remains a vital cultural and religious tradition for the people of Hue, preserving ancestral values while offering visitors a glimpse into the city’s rich spiritual heritage.
