HCMC – The police of the Mekong Delta province of An Giang caught red-handed a married couple illegally transporting sugar from Cambodia to Vietnam and confiscated 100 tons of the smuggled Cambodian sugar.

At 1.00 a.m. on October 12, while patrolling the border, a taskforce of the provincial police and the police of An Phu District, on suspicion, chased a boat leaving Cambodia for Vietnam along the Hau River and stopped it for an inspection, the local media reported.

Onboard the boat were Le Toan Trung, aged 34, who lives in Can Tho City, and his wife, Nguyen Thuy Oanh, aged 31.

The taskforce discovered that the two were transporting 2,000 bags of sugar weighing some 100 tons. As Trung and his wife failed to show any invoice and documents associated with the origin of the goods, the competent forces arrested them for transporting illegal goods.

At the police station, Trung and Oanh admitted that they were hired to transport the sugar from Cambodia to Vietnam.
