HCMC — The My Thuan Project Management Board has proposed building Can Tho 2 Bridge over the Hau River, with a total estimated cost of nearly VND30 trillion, according to a pre-feasibility study submitted to the Ministry of Construction.

The project includes a combined road-and-rail bridge and approach roads in Vinh Long Province and Can Tho City.

Under the proposal, the project would start at the Cha Va interchange, the end point of the My Thuan–Can Tho Expressway in Vinh Long, and end at the IC2 interchange, linking to the National Highway 91–Nam Song Hau route and the Can Tho–Hau Giang Expressway.

The bridge would cross the main navigation channel of the Hau River. It would have six lanes, a design speed of 100km per hour, and a navigational clearance width of 300 meters. The main span is planned as a cable-stayed structure. No emergency stopping lane would be included on the bridge to limit costs.

The project also covers around 15km of expressway approach ramps, along with upgrades to the Cha Va and IC2 interchanges. Several medium and small bridges would be built along the route. These sections would meet full six-lane expressway standards and include emergency stopping lanes.

Total investment is estimated at VND29.53 trillion. Construction and equipment costs account for about VND21.24 trillion. Project management and consultancy costs are estimated at VND2.12 trillion, while compensation and resettlement are put at around VND2.65 trillion. The remainder is set aside for contingencies.

The project management unit has proposed using state budget funds. Construction is planned to start in 2027 and take about five years.

Once completed, Can Tho 2 Bridge would connect the My Thuan–Can Tho and Can Tho–Ca Mau expressways on the eastern North–South corridor. It would also link key east–west routes in the Mekong Delta and help reduce traffic pressure on National Highway 1A.
