HCMC — Vietnam’s consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.07% in April from the previous month, driven by increases in rental, food, and dining-out prices, data from the General Statistics Office showed.
Compared to December 2024, the index climbed 1.37%, and was up 3.12% from a year earlier.
Average CPI for the first four months of 2025 rose 3.2% year-on-year. Core inflation in the same period was 3.05%.
Eight of 11 groups of consumer goods and services used to calculate the CPI posted price increases in April. Housing and construction-related goods rose the most at 0.62%, contributing 0.12 percentage point to the overall CPI. Rental prices jumped 0.57%, electricity increased 1%, and water prices climbed 1.57%. Kerosene dropped 3.57% due to price adjustments.
Other goods and services rose 0.15%, with jewelry prices up 7.32%, tracking gold prices.
Food and catering rose 0.12%. Staple food prices fell 0.65%, but food items inched up 0.17% and dining-out increased 0.32%.
Prices of beverages and tobacco edged up 0.11%, while household appliances picked up 0.1%. Apparel, footwear, and health services recorded smaller gains.
Culture, entertainment, and tourism increased 0.01%, with tour packages up 0.26% amid higher travel demand during holidays.
Post and telecommunications fell 0.15%, due to lower smartphone and tablet prices.
Transport declined 1.05%, subtracting 0.1 percentage point from the overall CPI. Gasoline and diesel prices dropped 2.83% and 3.31%, respectively. Car and motorcycle prices also fell slightly, though some transport services and maintenance costs rose.
Education remained stable, with a slight decline in service prices due to a tuition support policy in Lao Cai Province.
Core inflation in April rose 0.21% month-on-month and 3.14% year-on-year. It remained below the overall CPI due to excluded items such as food, electricity, and healthcare.
