The imbalance in regional power supply and demand has exacerbated the power shortage in northern Vietnam. Are there any immediate solutions to the situation? A problem that has recently plagued the economy is the local power shortage, specifically in the north of the country, although it is not a nationwide issue. During the summer, the country consumes nearly 1 billion kWh per day, with approximately 50% of that in the North. Supply The main sources of power supply for northern Vietnam are thermal power and hydropower, each accounting for 40% of the total supply. The southern and central regions supply thermal power and renewable power, with each accounting for 40% of the total supply. During the summer, water sources in the north are scarce, while power consumption from households and offices increases due to higher usage of air conditioning and outdoor services. The north also receives power transmitted from the southern and central regions. However, the transmission capacity is limited and cannot be upgraded overnight, making it impossible to balance the power supply among the three regions. Additionally, the power shortage is also due to undeveloped power projects. Demand Data updated on June 17, 2023, from the National Load Dispatch […]
