HCMC – The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has proposed adding Gia Binh International Airport to the national airport development plan for 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, reported the local media.

The proposal, submitted to the Ministry of Construction, includes reducing the capacity of Noi Bai International Airport to manage regional air traffic.

Gia Binh is expected to handle 30 million passengers annually by 2030 and 50 million by 2050. Noi Bai’s capacity will be cut to 35 million passengers per year by 2030 and 60 million by 2050.

The two airports, 43 kilometers apart, share limited airspace, requiring traffic redistribution. The addition of Gia Binh will increase land use and investment costs for Vietnam’s airport system, currently estimated at VND443 trillion through 2030. Revised cost estimates are pending.

The aviation authority requested updates to align Decision 648/QD-TTg issued in June 2023 with Decision 347/QD-BXD issued in April 2025, which includes Gia Binh in the airport list. The changes aim to support economic growth, social development, and national security, it said.
