HCMC – The proposed Ben Thanh–Can Gio metro line in HCMC is expected to begin commercial service in early 2028, according to documents released for public consultation.

VinSpeed, a high-speed rail developer under Vingroup, has submitted the project’s environmental impact assessment report. The planned line will run nearly 53 km from the central station adjacent to the landmark Ben Thanh Market to the coastal commune of Can Gio, passing through eight wards and communes and requiring around 317 hectares of land.

The route will start at the Ham Nghi–Le Loi intersection and end at the under-construction Vinhomes Green Paradise project site. VinSpeed plans to build a double-track standard-gauge line with a design speed of 350 km/h.

The first phase will include two stations at Ben Thanh and Can Gio. Four additional stations—Tan Thuan, Tan My, Nha Be and Binh Khanh—will be added later. The operations control center and depot will be located in Can Gio.

The project will require an estimated VND86.65 trillion. Construction will account for more than VND37 trillion, equipment for VND24.7 trillion, project management for VND7.4 trillion, contingencies for VND10.7 trillion, and interest during construction for VND5.8 trillion.

VinSpeed plans to complete the feasibility study and land clearance in the fourth quarter of 2025. Construction and equipment installation are scheduled through the third quarter of 2027, with trial operations planned for late 2027 and commercial service in the first quarter of 2028.

Each train will have eight cars with a capacity of 600 passengers. Services will run every 20 minutes, equivalent to about 43,680 passenger trips per day.

VinSpeed has also registered to invest in the proposed North–South high-speed rail project, which is estimated to cost VND1.56 quadrillion, excluding land clearance. The company has recently released the environmental impact assessment report for a separate 120-km Hanoi–Ha Long high-speed rail project worth VND138.93 trillion, which is scheduled for trial operations in late 2027 and commercial service in early 2028.
