HCMC – HCMC plans to start work on the Ben Thanh–Thu Thiem section of Metro Line No. 2 before April 20 under directives to accelerate the project’s implementation.

The municipal government has ordered departments and agencies to mobilize resources and apply special mechanisms to meet the deadline, according to a notice issued by the city government office summarizing conclusions from a February 24 meeting chaired by HCMC Vice Chairman Bui Xuan Cuong.

The city approved the formation of an appraisal council to review the project’s feasibility study. Relevant agencies must appoint representatives and complete the process by March 1, 2026.

The Department of Construction was tasked with proposing the project as an urgent investment under a public-private partnership. It must also prepare a detailed implementation plan defining responsibilities, timelines, and authority to ensure construction begins on schedule.

The Department of Planning and Architecture will finalize route alignment and station locations, including connections with Metro Line No. 7 and Thu Thiem Station. The department must also collect feedback from affected residents and related agencies.

The Department of Finance will oversee the selection of appraisal consultants, while the Department of Agriculture and Environment will study build-transfer contract options and land allocation for investor payments, aligned with the planned groundbreaking timeline.

The city also assigned the Department of Finance to select a consulting unit to prepare the feasibility study for the Thu Thiem–Long Thanh railway and submit it to the municipal government by February 28.

According to the city government, the Ben Thanh–Thu Thiem section, along with the Ben Thanh–Tham Luong segment of Metro Line No. 2 and the Thu Thiem–Long Thanh railway, forms part of the urban rail network linking HCMC and Dong Nai Province. The projects are intended to improve public transport capacity and build connectivity between Long Thanh International Airport, downtown HCMC, and Tan Son Nhat International Airport. The city aims to complete these lines before 2030.

In January 2026, the city allowed Truong Hai Group Corporation (THACO) to prepare the feasibility study for the Ben Thanh–Thu Thiem section.

Under the approved plan, the 6.2-kilometer line will begin at Ben Thanh Station, run underground along Ham Nghi Boulevard, cross the Saigon River to the Thu Thiem urban area, and continue along Mai Chi Tho Boulevard to Thu Thiem Station.

THACO is currently the lead contractor in a consortium building the Ben Thanh–Thu Thiem section.
