HCMC — Ca Mau airport has been shut for one year to make room for a VND2.4 trillion expansion project, according to the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV).

The airport will remain shut from October 30 this year to October 31 next year, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has instructed operators to maintain security, safety, fire prevention measures and environmental standards during the closure. It also requested Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation to issue aviation notices as required and asked the Southern Airports Authority to increase inspections and enforce regulations.

ACV began construction on August 19. The project will expand and upgrade facilities to handle larger aircraft such as Airbus A320 and A321. Funding comes from ACV’s own capital.

The airport has a runway that is 1,500 meters long and 30 meters wide and able to handle ATR 72 twin-engine turboprop, short-haul airliners. Its passenger terminal can accommodate 200,000 passengers a year.

Under Vietnam’s aviation plan, Ca Mau airport is expected to meet ICAO 4C standards by 2030 with a capacity for one million passengers a year, rising to three million by 2050.
