HCMC – Cai Mep Port has been named one of the world’s 10 most efficient container ports for the first time, according to the 2023 Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) released by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence.
Cai Mep Port jumps five spots to become the world’s 7th, Asia’s 5th, and Southeast Asia’s 2nd most efficient container port, behind only Malaysia’s Tanjung Pelepas. Last year, it ranked 12th in the world.
The CPPI report, first published in 2021, evaluates the efficiency of container ports based on ship berthing and cargo handling time, productivity rates, cargo volume per call, and ship navigation duration. The number of ports assessed has increased from 351 in the first report to 405 this year.
Cai Mep Port’s rise in the rankings reflects improvements in ship reception processes, faster cargo handling, and enhanced navigational safety due to dredging efforts. These developments have contributed to the port’s ability to handle larger ships and increased cargo volumes.
Recent expansions at Cai Mep include the second phase of Gemalink Port and the establishment of a port alliance between Tan Cang Cai Mep-Thi Vai and Cai Mep International Terminal.
