HCMC – The Ministry of Transport has begun preparatory steps for the expansion of the two-lane Cam Lo-La Son Expressway amid rising deadly accidents, with work expected to commence sometime this year and completion next year.
The number of lanes on the 98-kilometer expressway will be doubled to four, excluding emergency stopping lanes, at a total estimated cost of around VND6.5 trillion.
Cam Lo-La Son, a vital section of the eastern North South Expressway, was opened to traffic in early 2023. In the first phase of development, the expressway has only two lanes and no concrete median, making it dangerous to travel at high speed.
In recent weeks, two deadly accidents have happened on the expressway, with five people killed and many others injured.
The most recent accident occurred last night, March 10, in Phong Dien District, Thua Thien-Hue Province, when a bus carrying 42 passengers from Quang Tri to Danang on the Cam Lo-La Son Expressway smashed into a stationary truck.
The collision led to multiple passengers being ejected onto the road, claimed two lives and injured seven others.
Earlier, on another section of the expressway passing through Phong Dien District, Thua Thien-Hue Province, a three-vehicle collision left a mother and her two children dead.
