HCMC – Can Tho City has proposed building a 45-kilometer dyke to enclose Dung Islet under a nearly VND3 trillion climate resilience project financed partly by the World Bank.

The city’s Department of Agriculture and Environment reported that the dyke system would stabilize production on about 9,939 hectares on the islet, including 7,739 hectares of farmland and the remainder used for aquaculture.

The project aims to limit erosion, prevent overflow and reduce the effects of climate change on the islet along the Hau River.

The dyke is part of the Mekong Delta Climate Resilience and Integrated Transformation Project (MERIT-WB11) being prepared by Can Tho. Total investment is estimated at nearly VND3 trillion, with over VN1.98 trillion funded by World Bank ODA loans and the rest from local counterpart funding.

The project also includes infrastructure in other areas to control water flows, reduce flooding and address saltwater intrusion.

Low-lying areas along the Quan Lo–Phung Hiep canal are expected to receive flood-control works to support agricultural and aquaculture production in multiple localities, along with several communes formerly part of Hau Giang Province.

In the Nuoc Duc–Nuoc Trong river area, infrastructure is planned to control acid sulfate leakage, limit dry-season saltwater intrusion and reduce flooding during the rainy season.

The project also promotes agricultural livelihood changes to adapt to climate conditions, encouraging production models suited to local ecological zones and more efficient use of land and water resources.

According to the city plan, Can Tho expects to submit the investment proposal to the World Bank in the first quarter of 2026.
