Drought and salinity intrusion

How can we effectively combat drought and salinity intrusion in the Mekong Delta to ensure an adequate water supply for daily life and agricultural production? This critical question was posed by numerous National Assembly deputies to Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dang Quoc Khanh during a Q&A session on June 6. With over 40 years of scientific research and field study in southern provinces, Dr. Nguyen Dang Nghia, an agricultural expert, expressed his satisfaction when the National Assembly (NA) addressed the critical issues of drought, salinity intrusion, and water resource shortages during a Q&A session with the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment. According to Dr. Nghia, climate change is a global phenomenon with increasingly severe impacts on Vietnam, particularly the Mekong Delta. Ensuring sufficient water for daily life and agricultural production has become a pressing national issue. In a report sent to NA deputies before the Q&A session, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment attributed drought and water shortages in the south-central region and the Central Highlands to climate change and the El Nino weather phenomenon.
