Cement plants tap waste-heat power to meet green targets

HCMC – Vietnamese cement producers are accelerating investments in waste-heat recovery power projects to curb electricity costs, reduce reliance on the national grid, and meet green production targets.

Under the national building materials development strategy for 2021–2030, all production lines with a capacity of at least 2,500 tons of clinker per day must install and operate waste-heat power systems by the end of 2025. Nearly 60% of plants have completed installation, while the rest are racing to meet the deadline.

Nghi Son Cement Corporation has awarded a contract worth VND557 billion to a consortium led by Anhui Conch Kawasaki Engineering Group for its project. VICEM Ha Tien is holding an international tender for a VND267 billion system at its Kien Luong plant, according to the industry website at ximang.vn.

VICEM Haiphong and VICEM Hoang Thach have also selected contractors for projects valued in the hundreds of billions of dong.

Once 63 designated production lines are equipped, the total generation capacity could reach 475 megawatts, roughly equivalent to a large thermal power plant. Experts say the technology can significantly cut purchases from the grid and reduce CO2 emissions.

Cement production accounts for around 17% of Vietnam’s CO2 emissions, or an estimated 62–70 million tons annually. The national strategy targets 15% alternative fuel use by 2030, rising to 30% in the 2031–2050 period. Cement plants are also piloting emissions quota inventories for 2025–2026.
