HCMC – A comprehensive upgrade plan for Con Dao Airport on the southeastern island of the same name is set to be submitted to the prime minister in the second quarter of this year, according to local media reports.
The Government Office issued Document No. 248/VPCP-CN on January 9, outlining the upgrade plan for Con Dao Airport.
The project, covering the period from 2021 to 2030 with a vision to 2050, aims to modernize the airport and stimulate economic growth in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.
The Ministry of Transport and the Ba Ria-Vung Tau People’s Committee have been tasked with preparing the plan, which proposes upgrading the airport through a public-private partnership (PPP) to meet international standards.
Key upgrades include facilities to handle larger aircraft such as the Airbus A320, A321, A350, and Boeing 787. Passenger capacity is projected to increase from two million annually by 2030 to three million by 2050, reflecting growing tourism demand.
Built in 2004, Con Dao Airport is currently limited to smaller aircraft like ATR72 due to its short runway. The proposed upgrades aim to resolve these issues, enhance safety, and significantly expand the airport’s capacity.
