HCMC – Con Dao Island has been officially connected to Vietnam’s national power grid, replacing costly local diesel generation and ensuring stable electricity supply for the island.

The Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) reported that at 4:05 a.m. this morning, September 4, the 110kV Con Dao transformer station was successfully commissioned. This follows the completion of the island’s grid connection project, which was first activated on September 2.

The project, launched to mark the 80th anniversaries of the August Revolution and National Day, aims to provide reliable, uninterrupted power for Con Dao, supporting economic and social development while strengthening national defense and improving residents’ living conditions.

According to EVN, linking Con Dao to the national power grid will replace diesel-based power generation, lowering electricity production costs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, in line with Vietnam’s sustainability and emission-reduction commitments.

The project required advanced engineering to overcome harsh offshore construction conditions. It has a total investment of over VND4.9 trillion, with VND2.53 trillion funded by the central Government and the remainder by EVN. Power Project Management Board 3 managed its implementation.

Construction began in December 2024. The grid connection spans 103.7 kilometers, including 17.5 kilometers of overhead lines, 77.7 kilometers of undersea cables, and 8.5 kilometers of underground cables on the island. It also involves the construction and expansion of transformer stations.
