Conquering Lung Cung Peak in northern Vietnam

By Ngoc Luong

Must read

Standing proudly at 2,913 meters above sea level, Lung Cung is one of northern Vietnam’s tallest mountains, offering breathtaking scenery and an escape into nature’s tranquility. This majestic peak draws trekking enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Lung Cung Peak is situated in Nam Co Commune, Mu Cang Chai District, Yen Bai Province, roughly 20 kilometers from Mu Cang Chai Town. Its name comes from a secluded village high in the rugged Nam Co mountains, home to more than 300 Thai and Kinh families.

The trek to the summit begins with a 45-minute motorbike ride along a rugged, winding path from Lung Cung Village, followed by an 11-kilometer uphill hike. Though challenging, the route rewards adventurers with stunning, untouched landscapes at every turn.

As trekkers ascend, they encounter vast terraced rice fields and waterfalls cascading in white streams, creating a harmonious blend of nature and cultivated land. Early morning mist rises from wooden houses, mingling with low-lying clouds for an ethereal view.

The vegetation becomes more diverse and dense as hikers progress. Ancient trees, some so large that they require three or four people to wrap their arms around, tower over the forest floor. Purple wildflowers bloom along the slopes, their petals glistening with morning dew. Occasionally, groups of monkeys or squirrels dash through, adding a lively touch to the forest’s serenity.

The ideal trekking season for Lung Cung is from September to April

At the summit of Lung Cung, travelers are often greeted by a breathtaking sea of dense clouds, shrouding the vast mountainous landscape in an ethereal mist. From this vantage point, one can look down upon the cloud-filled valley cradling Lung Cung Village, with views extending to the neighboring Che Cu Nha Commune and even reaching the distant peaks and forests of Nam Xay Commune in Van Ban District, Lao Cai Province. In that tranquil moment, the steep slopes and strenuous trek fade away, leaving only awe and reverence for nature’s grandeur, with the heavenly clouds of Lung Cung stretching out below.

Adding to the summit’s splendor, vibrant forest blooms like rhododendrons, red maples, and other native blossoms punctuate the landscape with bursts of color, enriching the already stunning scenery.

The best time to embark on a trek to Lung Cung is between September and April when dry conditions make the journey more manageable. Travelers should come prepared with sturdy trekking shoes, warm clothing, essential food supplies, and any necessary medications to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure.
