HCMC – Key construction materials for the Can Tho-Ca Mau Expressway, a major section of the North-South Expressway, have been secured following the approval of new sand and stone extraction sites, according to the Ministry of Construction.
An Giang Province has reopened sand mines in Khanh Hoa and Hoa Lac communes, supplying nearly two million cubic meters of sand, local media reported. The province has also resumed river sand recovery from the Vam Nao dredging project in Phu Tan District.
Dong Thap Province has approved higher extraction limits at two mines in Thuong Thoi Tien and My Xuong, adding 475,000 cubic meters of sand to the project.
For roadbed construction, An Giang has extended the mining license for the Antraco stone quarry, while Kien Giang Province has designated the Tra Duoc Lon and Hon Soc stone mines for exclusive contractor use. Despite these measures, daily extraction capacity remains at 35,000 cubic meters, well below the project’s requirement of 69,000 cubic meters per day.
To address sand shortages, the Ministry of Construction said that sections where roadbed loading was completed in January and February will use additional stone materials in March and April to ensure conditions for unloading by September 2025.
The Can Tho-Ca Mau Expressway spans 110 kilometers with a total investment exceeding VND27.5 trillion. It is divided into two segments: the Can Tho-Hau Giang section, covering 37 kilometers with an investment of VND10.37 trillion, and the Hau Giang-Ca Mau section, spanning 73 kilometers with an investment of VND17.15 trillion.
Construction began in January 2023 and is scheduled for completion in 2025. As of now, the Can Tho-Hau Giang section is 67% complete, while the Hau Giang-Ca Mau section has reached 57%, according to the My Thuan Project Management Board.
