HCMC – Investigators of the Danang Police Department have filed charges against Ton That Thanh, director of the city’s Center for Disease Control (CDC), due to irregularities related to the procurement of Covid test kits from Viet A Technology Corporation.

Thanh, aged 58, was arrested at his house on Le Loi Street in Hai Chau District at 5:30 p.m. today, June 20, for alleged asset misappropriation.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan, aged 40, who serves as head of the medical testing laboratory department at Danang CDC, was also detained for the same charges.

Besides, the police decided to place Le Thi Kim Chi, an employee at the medical testing laboratory department, under house arrest.

The preliminary investigation results show that between 2020 and 2021, Thanh and his subordinates worked with Viet A Company to gain profits from the city’s Covid test kit procurement.

Thanh directed Nhan and Chi to falsify documents to inflate the prices of Covid test kits, illegally transition tens of thousands of group testing samples into single ones and forge the purchase from donations.

The trio appropriated over VND4 billion in the Covid test kit case.

Danang CDC bought 15 batches of test kits from Viet A, with each priced at VND509,250, the local media reported, citing Thanh.
