HCMC – The Dau Tieng reservoir in Tay Ninh Province began releasing water into the Saigon River at 7 a.m. on November 25, with discharge volumes ranging from 36 to 200 cubic meters per second.
The controlled release will continue until December 2 in response to complex weather patterns and the approach of a tropical depression that may strengthen into Storm 15.
According to the Southern Irrigation Management Company, the release plan is based on updated forecasts from the meteorological agency. The reservoir’s water level currently stands at 23.90 meters, about 0.5 meter below the pre-flood safety threshold of 24.40 meters.
Discharge levels may be adjusted depending on rainfall and tidal conditions downstream.
Following the release period, Dau Tieng will maintain a minimum post-dam flow of 36 cubic meters per second in line with the inter-reservoir operation protocol.
Authorities said a maximum discharge of 200 cubic meters per second is not expected to cause flooding in riverside areas under normal conditions. However, localized flooding may occur in low-lying areas if heavy rains coincide with high tides. Local governments have been asked to issue warnings and prepare response measures.
As the tropical depression to the south shows signs of strengthening, the HCMC departments and relavant angencies have been told to monitor forecasts closely and prepare rescue resources. Coastal and island localities, including Con Dao, along with border guards, fisheries units and maritime information stations, are implementing measures to ensure the safety of vessels at sea and in port areas.
Irrigation and infrastructure agencies are coordinating with local authorities to operate reservoirs, tide-control gates and drainage systems, while preparing mobile pumps to handle potential flooding during heavy rainfall.
