HCMC – Deo Ca Group has proposed expanding the My Thuan–Can Tho Expressway to six lanes under a public-private partnership to avoid capacity constraints on the HCMC–Can Tho corridor.
The proposal – which also covers an expansion of the connector linking the HCMC–Trung Luong–My Thuan Expressway, from the Than Cuu Nghia interchange to National Highway 1A – has been sent to the Ministry of Construction.
Under the national road network plan for 2021–2030, with a vision to 2050 approved by the prime minister, the My Thuan–Can Tho Expressway is planned as a six-lane route and scheduled for investment before 2030, reported the Vietnam News Agency.
The expressway is currently in operation under its first-phase design, with four lanes, a 17-meter-wide roadbed, and emergency stopping lanes arranged discontinuously.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Construction is carrying out investment procedures for the Can Tho 2 Bridge, which is planned with six lanes. Other sections of the expressway axis linking HCMC and Can Tho are being developed to six- or eight-lane standards, while the My Thuan–Can Tho section remains at four lanes.
Deo Ca Group warned that without early expansion to six lanes, the My Thuan–Can Tho section could become a traffic bottleneck, reducing throughput and limiting the efficiency of the entire corridor.
The proposal follows Official Dispatch No. 05, signed by the prime minister on January 20, calling for an urgent review and upgrade of expressways built in phases to reach full design standards.
Deo Ca Group proposed studying a PPP investment plan to expand the My Thuan–Can Tho Expressway to six complete lanes over a length of about 23 kilometers.
The company also suggested expanding the connector from the Than Cuu Nghia interchange to National Highway 1A to six motor vehicle lanes and two mixed-traffic lanes, with a total length of about six kilometers.
