HCMC – The expanded Deo Ngang Tunnel, which connects Ha Tinh and Quang Tri provinces, was completed on July 16, ahead of schedule.
The project, part of a project to upgrade National Highway 1, includes the expansion of several key bridges and tunnels, including Xuong Giang, Gianh, Quan Hau and Deo Ngang. The work, valued at over VND219 billion, began on January 13, 2025, and was managed by the Railway Project Management Board, reported the Vietnam News Agency.
The expanded tunnel stretches 650 meters, with a 555-meter tunnel section, and allows vehicles to travel at a maximum speed of 80 km per hour. The four-lane tunnel runs through the Hoanh Son mountain range, linking Hoanh Son in Ha Tinh with Phu Trach in Quang Tri.
The project was completed one month ahead of schedule, despite initial delays in site clearance and test blasting. The Railway Project Management Board has urged the contractor to complete the remaining work and aims for the tunnel to be fully operational by the end of this year.
The expansion is expected to improve traffic flow and logistics along the busy National Highway 1.
